Female Hair Loss Or Women Hair Fall Causes
Female hair loss can be caused by number of factors including stress, genetics or various medical issues. It can be temporary or may be ongoing depending on the diagnosis. In some cases, the underlying cause can be left untreated. Consulting an expert in this case is essential to analysis and ensures the correct treatment is achieved and right course of action is taken.
The few common causes which trigger hair loss in women are:
Being pregnant is one the biggest stresses that a woman puts her body through. During this phase, there is a change in hormonal levels causing many bodily changes – and your hair is also not immune from these changes. During pregnancy, there is increased Estrogen hormone level.
Estrogen causes our hair to remain in their growing stage, as well as stimulate hair growth. Post-delivery, the hormones return of your normal levels, and this causes massive shock to body and to hair. Hair loss is experienced where about 60% of hair enters in resting phase, causing lot of hair shedding.
POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – or PCOS – is thought to be one of the causes of hair loss.
As PCOS is a hormone disorder – affecting specifically your endocrine levels causing imbalances in hormone. When there is an increased DHT levels in body, it leads to hair loss.
Menopause has vast effect on your hair and body, all caused due to decreasing estrogen level.
Besides hot flushes, mood changes and sudden facial hair increase is experienced. You can also expect hair thinning, hair line receding and increased hair loss amount. These are all caused due to reduced Estrogen Levels.
Pattern and Grading of Female Hair Loss
The typical female pattern baldness is generally different from that of male pattern baldness. For female, hair starts thinning out more but the frontal hairline maintains its look, unlike in men with frontal recession. Female pattern baldness can typically appear to be similar to male pattern baldness, but rare progression to full or even nearing total baldness is low as it may see in men.
Some Typical Patterns of Female Hair Loss
- Diffuse hair thinning pattern seen over entire scalp, often more noticeable thinning towards the back.
- Diffuse thinning with more noticeable frontal thinning, but no frontal hairline involvement is seen. Patients in this group have the best results from hair transplant if they have good donor hair.
- Diffuse hair thinning with more noticeable towards the frontal scalp with sometimes involvement and breaching of frontal hairline.
- Diffused Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) is where the hair thins diffusely without any specific pattern. These patients are generally not an ideal candidate for hair transplant.
The Ludwing Scale for Female Hair Loss Or Women Hair Loss
The Ludwig Scale uses 3 different parameters or types to diagnose the female hair loss severity. It not only helps patients but also physicians to understand better the three major factors in treatment and diagnose of female hair loss:
- The degree to which hair has already been lost
- The potential for additional hair loss in the future
